California City Officials Deliver Their Message to Washington, D.C.
More than 100 California city officials joined 3,500 of their colleagues from across the nation in Washington, D.C., March 14-18, for the 2009 National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional Cities Conference. This annual event is a forum for city officials to communicate with U.S. senators, Congressional representatives and policy experts about the direct impact of federal decisions on local government.

Vice President Biden Hosts ARRA Briefing for Local Governments
The League attended a White House conference on implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 at the invitation of Vice President Joseph Biden on Wednesday, March 18. The vice president is heading up the oversight of ARRA and invited local governments to participate in the conference because of their role in ensuring that the implementation is effective, transparent, and efficient.

Pooled Money Investment Board Proceeds Cautiously, Awaiting Outcome of Planned $4 Billion Bond Sale
The Pooled Money Investment Board (PMIB) voted on March 18 to continue disbursing the $650 million authorized in January to fund the exempted 276 local public works projects. These projects are worth approximately about $3.6 billion. PMIB will reconvene the week of March 30 to review the outcome of the planned sale next week of $4 billion of tax-exempt government obligation bonds (GO bonds).

Bipartisan Commission Studies State Revenue Reform
The Commission on the 21st Century Economy held its third meeting on March 10 in Berkeley. Established by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the bipartisan commission is tasked with reviewing California's revenue laws and making modernization recommendations.
